‘I just had an interview with Sir Jamesina. She tells me that she wishes to marry you. And you, Mair, what are your feelings on the subject?’ Mrs Bennet looked at him quizzically.

‘Sir Jamesina is a most eligible match, he replied.

‘So she is, but is she an eligible match for you?’

‘Why should she not be?’ was Mair’s defiant reply.

‘Well, if you are determined to wed her, there is no more to be said on the subject, replied his mother.

She thought that Sir Jamesina would not be as amusing to Mair in the fullness of time, but she was far too indolent to put any obstacles in Mair’s way.
