Chapter Thirteen

Dare couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. Last night he’d sat in his car until he was notified that the guards were in place so he couldn’t understand this feeling of unease. He’d even checked the tracker on his holo-system to see if it could connect to Aya’s VC and just as she’d stated, he could no longer access it.

He should have stayed behind and waited until morning if he had to but seeing that look in her eyes had been more than he could bear. Instead of going straight home after leaving the Red District, he’d headed to his office in the business sector. He couldn’t stay in his house without her there. Every room in that house reminded him of Aya from the library where she liked to spend her spare time reading to the living room area where they’d made love on the floor in front of the electronic fireplace. He could picture her sitting across from him at the dining room table.

Being in the bedroom was the hardest. He missed holding her in his arms and inhaling her sweet scent. There was a point in time shortly after he’d realized that he loved her that he let her go because he thought he’d try to do the right thing. It had been excruciating to live apart from her, but they hadn’t been in an official relationship and Dare didn’t know how good things could be for them then. But having had Aya’s love and it being taken away from him was ten times worse.

Every day he woke up with an ache in his chest. He literally felt like he would die. Even though it was probably psychosomatic, the bullet scar on his chest ached. Dare doubted he could go months without her

At his office, he’d thrown himself into his work until he found himself falling asleep at his desk. When he was tired, he showered and slept on his couch and in the morning, he changed into one of his spare suits. But ever since he woke up that morning he was on high alert and he was almost certain it was because something was the matter with Aya.

He noted the time on his holowatch. It was still early, most of his workers were just starting to come in. Dare was certain that Ronald would be in by now so he contacted him.

“Yes Mr. O’Shaughnessy?” asked Ronald’s holographic image.

“Could you do me a favor and contact the security agency to check on the guards you sent last night. I need a report right away.”

“Certainly. I’ll be in touch within the next ten minutes.”

Dare paced around his office waiting for his assistant to call back, all while several different scenarios raced through his head. At the very least Ronald would report back to him and assure him that everything was okay and he was just being paranoid.

When ten minutes came and went, Dare grew impatient and contacted Ronald again.

“My apologies Mr. O’Shaughnessy, but there seems to be a problem with the guards.
