Drew lay in the sumptuous bed without illusions of sleep. The soft mattress and silken sheets were at odds with the circumstances. Letty waited for him in her cabin. There was no misinterpreting the pleading look she gave him as she left the meeting. What was he trying to prove? He’d planned to go to her, but the history of their relationship suddenly coalesced into a carrousel of images. The cycle repeated faster with every rotation until it was a blur.

When they’d first met, and through all that had happened up to now—give her credit—she’d never strung him along, never said she loved him except as a brother. Sure, she’d kidded around, flirting a bit, but more as a friend. And while he was in Vegas, she’d never contacted him. She hooked up with Crawford fast enough. To lure me in? Not buying that for a minute. Letty knew where to find him, and that all she had to do was curl a finger and he’d come running.

So now she claims she loves me. She wants to be with me and create a family for Toby. Drew had no doubt about Letty’s devotion to Toby. That’s what it boiled down to. When it came to something or someone that touched her life directly, Letty could be compassionate and earnest. So, when Toby’d rejected Xander—probably spotted him for a fake from the get-go—and went looking for Drew, Letty simply changed lanes.

What difference does any of it make now? If I go to her, it’s not as if I’m making a life-long commitment. And so what if I did? We’re only talking a few days here.

It wasn’t that simple.

His feelings, and Letty’s, and Toby’s, were trivial compared to the knowledge that Taleen Industries was in possession of weapons of incalculable destruction. And she intended to use them. The significance of it was so far reaching, so complex, and so horrific, that Drew was powerless to wrap his mind around it. Next to Letty, the Diak might prove to be buffoons; nothing more than thugs. Drew’s stomach soured and his love . . . affection . . . empathy . . . whatever he’d felt for her soured as well.

At the sound of a tentative knock at his hatch, he rolled toward the bulkhead and closed his eyes, but not to sleep.
