“So what's up, Thomas? You've been acting weird for the past couple of days.”

Looking up from the rabbit that I've been skinning, I see that Riley has wandered over. It's early, and the sun has only been up for a few hours, which means it's a little surprising that Riley is already out and about. Usually he and Katrina stay in the car for a while before finally showing their faces.

“Don't even try to deny it,” Riley adds. “All day yesterday, in particular, you were really jumpy. Your sister was the same. Something's quite clearly going on, and I'm just trying to figure out whether I need to be worried. Katrina's noticed, too.”

“You're imagining things,” I tell him, although I know that I don't sound very convincing.

“Thomas -”

“So are you still setting off soon?” I ask, hoping to change the subject. It's not that I want Riley and Katrina to leave, of course, but Martha has been nagging me and I need to figure out their plans.

“Yeah, sure,” he replies, a little uncertainly. “And what about you? Are you and your sister definitely gonna sit around here at the farm?”

“Why wouldn't we?” I say. “This is our home.”

“I know,” he says, and then he looks around as if he's not quite sure what to say next.

I can guess what he's thinking. He's thinking that this land is useless, that it'll take us too long to grow anything we can eat. Martha has been just about getting by on rabbits and a few berries she's foraged from the forest, but long-term this place isn't sustainable. I've been thinking the same thing. I hoped, at first, that Martha might have some magic bullet that would change everything, but that hope has dissipated and now I can see that the farm isn't going to work. At the same time, I don't have any better ideas, and I don't want to just tear everything down. I want to have an alternative lined up first. What are we supposed to do? Just drive off again in search of something better?

Hearing a sound over my shoulder, I turn and see that Martha is coming back from the forest. She glances at me, but she walks straight past, and I can't help but notice that she's returned empty-handed. She always checks the traps first thing in the morning, but evidently this time there's nothing.

“Thomas,” Riley says, “I think -”

“I have to go and talk to her about something,” I reply, interrupting him. “I'm sorry.”

“We don't want to just leave you here,” he tells me as I head away from him, following Martha toward the rear of the barn. “Thomas, we can't put this stuff off forever. We have to make a decision, and soon!”

Ignoring him, I hurry to reach Martha. She's been avoiding me, but this morning I need to find out the truth. As I reach her, I see that she's grabbing some more wire from one of the boxes in an outhouse behind the barn.
