Once again, standing outside Gloucester Road tube station, Martin and Susan talked about what their next move should be. Was there a maid at Beatrice’s or not? Had she now left because Beatrice had died? Had she killed Beatrice? Susan decided that there were just too many questions. Maybe they should ask at the flats, maybe one of the neighbours would have seen her, possibly spoken to her, know something about the mysterious maid. Martin planned to go home, shower and change before their dinner tonight. He had booked the table for eight o’clock and he was planning to be on time and hoped that Susan was also going to be on time for their dinner together. Susan, as ever, had other ideas and pointed out that it was only just gone half-past five, so they had plenty of time to knock on a few doors, get back to their respective homes, change, and then still be at the restaurant in plenty of time.

“So Martin, let’s do this. We’ll either get a lot of blank stares from the residents or one might come up trumps.”

Against Martin’s better judgement, (he much preferred taking his time getting ready and doing this might mean he would have to rush) he followed Susan along the road towards Hereford Square.

Both Martin and Susan stood side by side on the white stone steps leading up to the large communal door of the building. Together they looked at the six doorbell buttons.

“Well,” Martin asked, “shall we try some door bells or shall we just break in, which is all the fashion nowadays, I’m told?”

“Sarcasm is not your style, we'll ring the bells. Where do you want to start?”

“Let’s think about this for a moment. The last time you were in Beatrice's flat, you said there was no sign of a maid and you also got no reply, although she could, of course, have been out. There again, the police had to break into the flat, so she was not answering the door when they called. And let’s not forget the opinion of Paige, that there is no maid. So maybe it's safe to assume that Beatrice and her maid do not reside in the same flat, she could, however, be in a flat in the same building.”

“She’d have to be a bloody rich maid to afford the rents here; do you know how much they charge around here?”

“Beatrice was a shrewd old biddy, I am sure she could have come up with a solution.”

Martin pointed at the door-bell to one of the flats, number four, it was the only one without a surname against it.

“Could be empty, or the tenant has a really long name and can’t fit it on the little label these bells have,” Susan prompted.

“We'll see,” Martin pushed on the button, twice.

Soon after, a timid voice spoke from the intercom, the accent could have been foreign; the distortion of the speaker did not help.

“Yes?” The voice was young, nervous and female.

“Hello Miss,
