CHAPTER 11

Enzo

Ihaven’t had a lot of experience dealing with people. I grew up isolated. Isabella was the only real company I had until I turned eighteen, and since then, I haven’t really had anyone. I guess I’ve had Jason, but our relationship never actually progressed into the realm of talking through our feelings. Especially now that I’m his boss.

I can assemble a Rubix’s Cube in less than twenty minutes. I’m an expert at about three or four forms of martial arts. I’d say I pick shit up pretty easily and dominate everything that I do. But when it comes to human feelings, I’m woefully inept. Which is why the state in which Rosa and I have found ourselves in presently is extremely annoying.

One step forward, two steps back. And I have no fucking clue how to bridge that gap.

“Uncle Enzo,” Maria says, barging into my thoughts.

“Hm?” I reply, my eyes meeting hers through the rearview mirror.

I’m driving them to school since their normal driver is unavailable. Isabella is seated beside me, because she doesn’t trust me to deliver our little cousins safely. I’m honestly over her attitude. And it hits me that if I can’t manage to repair my relationship with my family, it’s highly likely I won’t be able to with Rosa either.

“Is Rosa your girlfriend?” Maria questions with a small smile.

Surprisingly, her brother speaks up as well. “When she came, you said she would be your wife. But our teacher says you can’t have a wife unless you’ve had a wedding. So are you and Rosa married?”

“We’re not married yet, guys. But we will be. We’re engaged, so right now she’s my fiancée.”

They fall silent, their expressions contemplative.

“So when will you get married?” Maria asks.

I pause to think about it. That’s a conversation we haven’t had. We probably should, as soon as we navigate through the stormy water we’re currently in.

“Before the end of the year,” I inform the twins. “Probably in the winter.”

Isabella’s gaze cuts to mine. “Who has a winter wedding?”

“Why? Worried it’ll be too cold for you?”

“That would mean I had plans to come to your stupid wedding and I don’t,” she mutters with a frown.

“I want to go to the wedding,” Maria says. “Can I wear a pretty dress to the wedding? Please, Isa?”

Isabella lets out a soft sigh. “Of course, my darling. You’ll go to Enzo’s wedding.”

“You’ll go, too?” Matthew asks hopefully.

She rolls her eyes. “Sure.”

The twins are perfectly happy as we drop them off at school. Isabella watches them enter the building with a sad smile on her face.

“I’m glad they’re happy again. They were so sad after their papa passed. I was worried they wouldn’t recover.”

My jaw clenches. “Of course. Kids are resilient. Until they’re not.”

She looks at me and something cracks in her expression. “Enzo…”

“Whatever you’re going to say, don’t,” I tell her.

Of all the people in my life, Isabella understands what I went through best. But that doesn’t mean I want to reminisce about old times.

“You and Rosa,” she says instead.
