Chapter Fourteen: Unmother
Hi Mom, hi Dad.
I found some people. This whole time alone I felt like yâall were watching me, yelling at me, âcommunity is the answerâ like you used to do every time I complained about school. Or anything. So I have a soldier friend who is also a poet and this old man who has an incredibly detailed memory. And this kid who might be a mind reader? Itâs whoâs here.
Anyway, I miss you so much. I am sorry. I am sorry for being so angry with both of you for dying. Part of me needs to blame you for leaving me. I canât figure out why you arenât here. Mom ⦠I canât figure out why you left me here. I donât understand, but I am trying to be curious Iâm trying to make it mean something.
I am sorry for not using our time together better. You are both with me all the time these days. Iâm not âgoing gentle into that good night,â Mom. And Dad, thanks for whatever makes the basement work?
Love
Dune
Dune and Dawud stepped out on the porch for Dawud to have a smoke. Down the street, brighter than the moon, was the MotorCity Casino, rainbow lights flashing in patterns up and down its face.
âNeon is forever!â Dawud sang, banging his palms against the porch ledge, hearkening a Jay-Z hook.
âNeon is a girlâs best friend,â Dune offered without thinking, a throaty modern Moulin Rouge singer.
Dawud nodded, his eyebrows lifting, his eyes flashing. He smiled, alive, and then reached forward to grab a porch beam, pulling himself up and spinning halfway around it before striking a pose.
âSometimes youâre really gay,â Dune said, sinking into a folding chair, happy to look away from the lit up ghost town at Dawudâs entertainment.
âSomeone has to be in this family.â Dawud kept spinning around the pole, turning, switching hands, bending occasionally. He was quite elegant.
âWhatchu mean?â Dune feigned defense.
âI mean ⦠you kind of got dicked down in this whole apocalypse.â Dawud swung around so his crotch was near her face. He was smiling and she realized he was a little erect. She felt annoyed.
âOh, like you not dick whipped?â Dune shot back. Dawud snapped to attention and dropped down on his knees, burying his face between her thighs.
âAbsolutely!â He pulled her thighs tight around his head and, once again, she was laughing helplessly.
âDawud!â Laughing. And then, pulling his head up to her, whispering, âDawud,â in a voice that made him look up at her face. She tilted his head back and thrust her tongue into his smoky mouth.
