ELEVEN

“Time’s up, Chris,” Tessa said through the phone, her tone exasperated. “You had your forty-eight hours, and you still don’t have enough proof that Eleni Townsend is definitely the target, or her daughter. It’s time to expand our focus.”

“There’s something here, Tessa,” Chris argued as he paced the well-worn path between the dock and the back of the tiny cabin where Eleni was staying. He’d spent the last two nights on the couch, while during the day, both he and Eleni had pored over computer records, digging into Montgomery Investments, Henry Jackson, and any connection they could find between them and Eleni, Katie and Charlie. They’d found nothing. Not one shred of evidence of wrongdoing at Montgomery, and absolutely no connections that would explain the events of the past few days. “And we still can’t explain why that mysterious man has been following her, or the fire that happened at her office. I’m telling you, my gut tells me there’s more here. We just need enough time to figure out what’s going on.”

“I’d like to help you,” Tessa said. “But you know I can’t. The powers that be have decided that Henry Jackson acted alone, and it was an isolated act of terrorism. You investigated a lead, and it didn’t pan out. No harm no foul, but it’s time to move on. We’re giving the fire at Eleni’s building over to the Chicago Police Department. They’re investigating that separately in conjunction with the Chicago Fire Department. We’re done, and it’s time to move on to the next one.”

Chris looked at the house, making sure Eleni was still inside and not within earshot. He moved slightly, and could see her through the window. She had given up her computer research, and was back at the boxes of her mother’s things, slowly sifting through the old paperwork. He knew she was just as frustrated as he was. They’d spent hours digging into the case and had absolutely nothing to show for it.

“Eleni and Katie are still in danger. I’d bet my life on it.”

“That may be true, but there’s nothing we can do about it. Turn her over to CPD, and let’s move on to the next case. We need evidence, not hunches.”

“Come on, Tessa. We were partners. Can’t you give me the benefit of the doubt?” He’d saved this card for last, hoping that reminding her of their past relationship would sway his boss. He was hesitant to mention their partnership, but these were desperate times, and he wanted to do everything in his power to keep Eleni safe.

Even so, it wasn’t enough. His heart dropped when her heard her reply.

“I already did. That’s why you got the forty-eight hours in the first place. I trust your gut, Chris. You know I do. But my hands are tied.”

Chris blew out a harsh breath and fisted his hands. He took a moment to compose himself, then raised the phone again. “Okay, Tessa. I understand. But you have to understand, too—I’m really worried, and am not ready to turn Eleni and Katie over to CPD.
