SLANSER PLANING MILL. In 1876, Joseph Slanser co-owned a patent on a wood-joining process that was used extensively in the framing of large buildings. He also owned and operated a lumber company at Market Street east of Chestnut Street that was one of the largest wood suppliers in the area. Records show that in 1901, the mill had an average stock of more than 300,000 board feet of lumber available. (Author’s collection.)

READY TO GO. Wearing their nail aprons advertising their employer, these workers may be getting ready to take the huge rough-cut board in front of them into the mill for planing. Fire was always a danger at mills due to the amount of sawdust and wood. A 1901 Sandborn-Ferris Fire Map showed that the Slanser company had a night watchman, as well as barrels of chemicals and water, to help reduce the risk of a major fire.
