Groups Help Form Your Identity

You can find meaning, purpose, and self-worth when belonging to a group. You tend to take on the identity of the groups you associate with, or you use the groups you identify with to express your identity. For example, if you enjoy sports, you may associate with your favorite sports team as if you are part of the team. Do you ever yell at the screen if your team makes a mistake, misses a shot, or loses? Do you scream in excitement if your team does something good? You get excited when they win and upset when they lose, even though you’re not playing, and the players don’t know who you are. If you’ve ever had a conversation with someone about sports and you say, “I can’t believe we lost yesterday!” or “We are going to win this year!” or “The team sucks this year!” or “I would have made that shot!!” then you’ve identified yourself with a group. You associate yourself with being part of the team. Anytime you catch yourself using the word “we” to discuss the group you belong to or “they” to discuss the group you distinguish yourself from, then you identify yourself with a group.

Social groups are important because they can define your identity by the ideas, beliefs, and customs you accept from them. The group becomes your identity. You can believe your identity is more important by taking on the larger identity of the group.
