SELF-MASTERY
One can have no smaller or
greater mastery than the
mastery of oneself.
—Leonardo da Vinci
To put the world right in order,
we must first put the nation in order;
to put the nation in order,
we must first put the family in order;
to put the family in order,
we must first cultivate our personal life . . .

DAILY CULTIVATION
Wehaveprunedandshapedourtree.Wehavedecidedwhat
we want, determined what truly matters to us, and chosen
our intentions. We have, through self-awareness, noticed the
thoughts that are destructive and diseased—the thoughts that
block our view of reality; waste our time, energy, and money;
and move us away from our intentions. We have developed our
powerful questions and powerful statements and have chosen to
replace weak thought patterns with powerful thought patterns. So
now what?
As gardeners, once we have pruned our tree, we pay attention to
the daily cultivation of that tree—how it’s watered, how it’s fed, its
environment, and its exposure to natural and unnatural elements.
We take care in its daily cultivation so that the tree resists stress
because we know that the trees that are susceptible to insects and
disease are the trees that are stressed. With care in daily cultivation, the tree develops a strong root system, trunk, and branches and
thrives in its full glory.

It’s the same for us. We can pay attention to the daily cultiva-
tion of our mind, body, and spirit—how we think, how we’re
watered, how we’re fed, our envi-
ronment, and our exposure to nat-

can take care in our daily cultiva-
tion so that we resist stress because we know that we are susceptible
to disease and injury—physical and mental—when we are
stressed. We know that with care in our daily cultivation, we
thrive in our full glory.
How do we cultivate ourselves? We cultivate our mind, body,
and spirit. We cultivate ourselves in how we live our lives in each
moment. We cultivate self-awareness. We cultivate self-mastery.
We cultivate being on purpose. We manage our thought, we
manage our energy, and we manage our spirit.
Cultivating ourselves is like a circular dance, and we can start
anywhere in the circle. Some of you may choose to begin by
cultivating your thoughts. This increases your energy, improves
your life, improves your choices in eating, drinking, and

exercising, and develops your spirit. Some of you may choose to
cultivate your energy, which develops your spirit and helps you
refine your thoughts and emotions. Some of you may choose to
work on your spirit first, which favorably affects your thoughts and
your energy. However you choose to start, just start.
In the following chapters, we look closely at managing our
energy, managing our spirit, and managing our thoughts.
Choose your seeds. Plant the seeds. Cultivate.
Energy and persistence conquer
all things.

MANAGING ENERGY
Wecultivateourselvesbymanagingourthoughts,managing
our energy, and managing our spirit. Because it is a circular
dance, managing our energy involves managing our mind, body,
and spirit. Buddhists, Taoists, Hindus, and Native Americans all
speak of the body being a temple and say that it is unnatural, and
therefore sinful, to harm the body. They
