The actual Zara score running free and wild near Place Vendôme in Paris. These pants deserved to travel the world.
There was no chair at my desk so I left my cubicle to find one—that’s when Peter and I made eye contact for the first time since our date. I knew he must have been coming from the bathroom, so I was wondering if he had washed his hands, and in doing so, accidentally winked at him. I continued walking as if it hadn’t happened, but once I found a chair and wheeled it back to my desk, I was pleasantly surprised by another text message waiting for me on my BlackBerry. It was a pin number. Peter’s pin number. Were we becoming BBM pals? This was 2010, remember, when RIM had not yet trumped the telegraph as most obsolete purveyor of communication devices ever, so it was serious.
I added him and before I knew it, we were back on.
“What are you doing tonight?” He asked me.
“Well if it isn’t the fancy boss man,” I responded. Why had I been rebutting like a douche bag all day? It was only 9 a.m.
We bantered back and forth for a little while, but I didn’t have the courage to tell him I couldn’t hang out that night. Even though I had forgotten all about him on the train that morning, he managed to procure just about the same amount of butterflies that Abie did. What was this strange feeling?
“I have an early drinks thing, but let’s have dinner,” I told him. Double booked! This was fun.
I wondered why this sudden uptick in my attractiveness to the male species was happening now, though. Why the only two objects of my affection were interested in me on this particular day. Every other night that week I had gone home, taken a shower, and brushed my hair while watching Friends reruns. Was it the pants? Probably not. If I knew anything about men, it was that they did not particularly care for the “Ice Ice Baby” female wardrobe equivalent.
At seven o’clock I was ready to leave work and set to meet Abie at a bar near my office. Upon entering and spotting him, I rid my mind of the awkward kiss approach versus just wave approach, and based on that morning’s exchange, went in for the smooch. He had put his hand out to shake mine, which I only realized when I felt it jab into my stomach. It was really awkward.
We shot the shit for half an hour, talking about the same mundane things we had covered that morning. A few drinks later and I finally asked him, “So, why’d you decide to ask me to drinks tonight?”
“Well,” he began. This was going to be good.
“I just saw you getting off the train today in those cool pants and I couldn’t help but think, gosh, she looks great. Happy and independent. I don’t know, you were glowing.”
Had he really liked my gauzy harem pants? Harem pants! They were a sure-fire contraceptive—anyone could tell you that.
