CHAPTER 14

RAY

Ray yawned widely as he leaned against the side of the campervan and stared out over the cliffs and the sea beyond. He’d been up here since ridiculous o’clock… mainly because he couldn’t bear ping-ponging around the house while he waited for Anna to turn up for their meeting. Because he now knew it was definitely Anna McCluskey he’d inadvertently managed to rope in for the job. Olive had confirmed it last night after her third glass of wine.

Ray had driven Mr Harris home as he’d promised, and after making sure the old man was steady enough on his feet to sort himself out ready for bed, Ray had left him and McGregor to their night-time routine and headed back to Crum House on foot. Crumcarey was so far north that it didn’t really get dark at this time of year, so it had been a stunning walk home - with dusky pinks and purples dancing along the edges of the world.

Even though he’d been dead on his feet by the time he’d finally fallen into bed, Ray hadn’t slept well at all. Thoughts of Anna had plagued him in the semi-darkness. She’d certainly turned into the most beautiful woman he’d ever set eyes on… but then, that wasn’t a surprise. Anna McCluskey had always had the power to take his breath away with a single look. It looked like that would never change.

What surprised Ray most was the strength of his reaction to seeing her again after so many years. He’d hoped his youthful infatuation with the girl would have worn off… but that clearly wasn’t on the cards. The problem was - there wasn’t a hope in hell she would ever look at him in the same way. To make matters worse, he knew that was all his fault.

The closest Ray had ever come to doing something about the way he felt was when he’d managed to muster the courage to ask her out for a walk. He’d wanted to take her to see the puffins, and it had taken him weeks to get up the guts to finally ask her. And then… well… she’d stood him up. It might have been a long time ago, but it still stung.

Ray didn’t really blame her, though. Just as with everything else linked to his childhood here on the island - he knew the whole thing was his fault for being such a nightmare for so long.

That’s why he was so grateful that Olive had accepted his apology last night. It felt like a huge weight had lifted off his shoulders – like the Crumcarey was welcoming him home properly for the first time in years. He couldn’t dare to hope the same magic might work a second time, could he?

Probably not.

The simple truth of it was - he’d been awful to Anna when they were kids. It had been so long ago, and such a long-running thing, that Ray couldn’t really remember what he’d done. It was mainly just stupid kid stuff, really.
