Emma stared at Nicholasâ retreating back. One part of her wanted to call him back, grab his shirt and pull him into her body, and her room and her bed, but the logical part of her brain told her to wait. She sighed, closing the door behind her.
If Nicholas hadnât told her he could wait, she wouldâve been the one to instigate their lovemaking tonight. Once he said that, Emma knew she had to be sensible. She needed to be sure this was what she wanted.
There was no doubt she wanted Nicholas. Since the first day she saw him at that interview, she had been aware of his intense green eyes, which looked as if he could see everything.
Over the last few weeks, she had gotten to know a different Nicholas. Not the rich, billionaire playboy image she got from the newspapers and gossip magazines or from his dating frenzy a few weeks ago. Not the strict and formidable boss she got from the financial pages. She got to know a strict, yet empathetic manager, a man who took care of his own.
He was a good friend and a good business partner, according to Mark. The other managers at the Wild Dogs, and here at SARU, all had respect for his management skills and business sense, even though Nicholas, in most cases, was half their age.
Emma got to know a man who was still a computer geek at heart, a regular, funny guy who in most cases couldnât communicate with everyone as his brain was thinking too fast for them. Was that why Nicholas got under her skin? Because he felt like a kindred spirit? Why could she talk, and argue with him, where she was always more reserved with other men?
Emma cleaned her face and dressed for bed. In bed, she lay for a while, thinking about Nicholas. What would happen between them? Had she thought it through? With a man like Nicholas it wouldnât stay at kissing. The kiss in the car proved that. Her breath hitched with the mere thought of Nicholas making love to her.
Emma closed her eyes with a groan. Just thinking about it had her moving on the bed. Emma didnât want to think about it now.
She lay there for a while, listening to the gentle crashing of the waves on the shore, when an image flitted through her brain. Another and another soon followed.
Emma was oblivious of the tears. How could she have forgotten those memories? Why did she only remember them now?
Maybe she suppressed them all these years since her mother died. Nobody wouldâve expected her to remember. She had been only six, and the memories were not clear. She remembered that just before her mother died, they had spent a holiday here in Cape Town.
Emma took deep breaths, trying to calm herself.
She now regretted not taking that nightcap Nicholas offered. She pumped her pillows in frustration and gave up, throwing away the blanket to get up. She had seen the small kitchen and fridge earlier.
