Although Qutb stressed that both capitalism and communism were bankrupt materialistic ideologies, while in prison he taught his supporters that America posed a graver threat to Islam than the Soviet Union. In addition to using American Islam as an ideological tool against Soviet communism, the United States had another sinister goal, Qutb suggested. They wanted to strike at the heart of Islamic doctrine (‘aqida) and to raise doubts in Muslims’ minds about their religion. Instead of seeing America’s two-pronged goals as mutually exclusive, Qutb saw them as fitting together as part of an integrated design to tame and domesticate Islam:

This army of collaborators is instructed to shake the foundation of ‘aqida in the soul by all means. [This] has taken the form of research, science, literature, art, and journalism. The intent is to belittle the importance of ‘aqida and the shari’a, to interpret it in an unsuitable manner, to emphasize its “reactionary character,” and to call for discarding it.64
