Chapter 20

“Put them through,” I said and gently lifted my arm away from hers.

Julia gulped. “Their timing isn’t great.”

“Tell me about it,” I muttered. “Just follow my lead. Business meeting interrupting a cute coffee date and a walk if anyone asks. Keep your eyes out for Wicket and any more suits, okay?”

Julia nodded.

My comms unit lit up with a call.

A feminine British accent washed through my earpiece. “Silver.”

“Portia,” I replied. “Long time, no see. You finally got around to returning my call.”

“Where are you?” she asked.

I debated lying for a fraction of a second and decided against it.

“On a holiday,” I said. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“We’ve gotten word from sources that say that Pine Gap’s out of commission,” the British supe replied bluntly. “It’s a surveillance station in Australia-”

“Heard about it,” I cut in. “You want me on the job?”

“That’s the last thing I want!” she snapped. “But, since I got the message from your people, and knowing your tendency to do whatever the bloody hell you want to, I’m assuming you’re already there.”

I glanced out at the river. “Not quite.”

“Don’t play games with me,” Portia warned.

“You want to talk about games?” I countered. “How about turning up on my balcony without warning, telling me to clean up my room, and then going dark for six months? You’re the worst stepmom I’ve ever had. I’ve been calling you pretty much every week.”

“We were busy,” she replied fiercely.

“Who’s ‘my people’?” I asked.

She let out a humorless chuckle. “You know better than to ask that.”

“Apparently, I don’t. You call me just to scold me, or do you have something to say?”

Julia and I paced across the riverside path and stopped off on a wharf. A small cluster of people had gathered at a gate, and a ferry sliced through the water towards us. I didn’t want to be stuck on a boat out on the river, but it sure as hell beat walking across a bridge on foot.

“I want you back in the States yesterday,” Portia told me.

“I like the climate down here. You going to begrudge a man a holiday?”

“This isn’t a game,” she snarled. “Do you have any idea what harm you could do on an international scale? There’s a reason the Initiative was put together. To stop incidents on a global scale. Your presence could be construed as an invasion—”

“I’m wearing sunglasses and a ball cap if that helps.”

Air hissed out through her teeth. “Why did you leave?”

“You going to level with me if I tell you?” I asked. “Or just tell me off some more?”

“Level with you?” Portia asked. “You have any idea the damage—”

“That I could do to your reputation as an international group of wizard Illuminati that hang out in the shadows and only let super-dangerous people into your cool-kids club?” I cut in. “Don’t take this personally, but the last time someone got obsessed with image and had superpowers, it didn’t go so well for them back home.”

I forced myself to take on a more level tone.
