In the hallway outside the elevator, the four Americans smiled and took snapshots of themselves in every conceivable combination.

“Why would General Shulgi have gone out of his way to make sure we only take pictures here?” asked Callow.

David shrugged. “I suppose every royal family has such rules.”

Catharine, Callow, and Buchanan stood up against a smooth grey wall while David took a snapshot using Catharine’s phone. As he viewed the picture he’d just taken, he gave them the thumbs-up but couldn’t help thinking with mild regret how much warmer the shot would have looked if they’d been standing up against the smooth sandstone lining the private quarters.

David shook hands with the men and gave Catharine a warm hug that he wished would never end. “I’ll see you all soon,” he said, mostly to Catharine.

The elevator door closed.

It took everything David had to keep from tearing his hair out. He suddenly felt unbearably miserable and alone.
