The key to exercise for people with arthritis is to maintain range of motion (joint flexibility). The old saying regarding exercise and arthritis is “motion is lotion.” Water workouts are ideal as therapy because water can minimize the pain and can assist in possible improvement of range of motion. Below is a list of common guidelines for persons with arthritis as suggested by medical doctors and physical therapists.• Never exercise unless following the advice of a health care professional.
• Don’t over-exercise.
• Don’t neglect your medical routine.
• Don’t mask pain by over-medicating.
• Don’t exercise a “hot joint” (a joint that’s swollen or warm to the touch).
• Obey the two-hour rule: If you hurt more two hours post-exercise, you did too much. Do less next time.
