Twelve

When I checked my phone in the car on the way back to my hotel, I saw that I had a couple of texts from Fletcher. First he acknowledged my response to his dinner invitation. His next message said he and a few others had gathered at his place after their dinner party, and I was welcome to join them. It hadn’t been sent too long ago. This might be my chance to get into Fletcher’s place and snag the reliquary. I texted him back that I was on my way and told the driver the new destination. Before we arrived, I removed the necklace and put it around my wrist so it wouldn’t show. Flaunting it probably wouldn’t be a great idea.

The doorman sent me straight up, and Fletcher met me at the elevator with a big bouquet of asters. The sight of a handsome man greeting me with flowers should have sent a thrill through me, but it left me utterly cold. In fact, I couldn’t even see Fletcher as handsome anymore. His features were still model-perfect, but the expression in his eyes made him unattractive to me now. Was I really so shallow that I’d been blinded by the superficial good looks and wealth? Maybe it was just that I’d met him while I was still reeling from rejection. Or maybe he’d put a spell on me that wearing the amulet had broken.

“You’re not still mad at me?” he asked, his forehead creased with what looked like genuine worry. Even so, his eyes gave him away. They were icy and calculating, like he was saying what he thought I wanted to hear. He was a real jerk, but was he really someone who’d be keen on taking over the world?

On the other hand, could I believe what Lancelot’s crowd had told me? Lancelot himself had warned me not to trust anyone, including himself.

If I was supposed to choose a leader, I didn’t have a lot to go on.

“I don’t know that I was ever truly mad,” I said. “More like disappointed.”

“What you saw doesn’t reflect who I really am.”

I made a noncommittal noise, took the flowers from him, and let him escort me into his apartment.

“Hey, everyone, look who dropped by!” he called out.

“We need to get you a drink,” Maggie said. “What’ll it be?”

“Just a soda, please,” I said. I’d already had enough to drink at Lancelot’s party, and I needed my wits for what I hoped to do.

“Did you have fun tonight?” Fletcher asked as he showed me to a seat.

“Yes, I did.” I very pointedly didn’t tell him where I’d been or what I’d been doing. I could see the curiosity on his face when I didn’t elaborate, and I hoped he had the manners not to pry.

“Were you with your other local friend?” he asked.

“The one I had lunch with yesterday? No. It was someone else.” I wondered how closely I was being watched. Did he know where I’d been and with whom, or had Lancelot found a way to hide that?

He nodded.
