Chapter Ten

Tom busied himself in the morning cleaning down the cart and grooming Hector ready for their departure to Eagle Creek, brushing aside the stable boy’s assurances that both would be ready after breakfast. Tom needed to be active, to keep his mind from Elise’s softly spoken “I love Wilson.” He had always known, from the very first, that he would never be able to replace her former husband in her heart. He had not wanted to. But he had come to hope that maybe one day she might find room for him there, too. But Tom knew that when it came down to it, he would accept whatever she was prepared to offer, her presence – and young Bailey’s – in his life had come to mean that much to him. He had never felt this way about a single living soul before, and to finally have found two such special people made him want to cling on to them with all his might.

Tom was sure that it was rare he saw a dollar all at once, but if he did a good job, then it would be money well-earned. Tom picked up the grooming brushes he had put to one side and went inside Hector’s stall.

“Hey boy,” he said to the chestnut cob, who was contentedly chewing at a hay bag. “Sorry I’ve not been in to see you, but you look like you have been enjoying your vacation just as much as we have.” Hector turned his big head, and nickered softly. Tom scratched his nose and patted his neck affectionately. Tom began using the coarse brush to remove the dust from the straw bedding, talking all the while to Hector in a soothing tone. “Well, she’s coming to Eagle Creek with us,” he said, as if the horse had asked him what the plan was. “I thought I had blown it utterly, but she just needs more time.” Hector nickered, as if responding and Tom laughed.

He moved onto using
