Chapter 10
Things quickly settled into a comfortable routine. Each morning Isobeille would rise at the same time he did and prepare him a hot breakfast (she really got the hang of the kitchen quite quickly). While Nick was working, Isobeille found plenty to keep herself busy. She cleaned and tidied Nickâs apartment â something Nick repeatedly asked her not to do. It was the only time Isobeille did not acquiesce, insisting that it was the very least she could do since he was providing her with food and shelter until they figured out something else. In truth, neither of them was trying really hard to make progress on that front.
For at least an hour each afternoon, Isobeille would have coffee with Mrs. Anderson. The two women seemed to take to each other immediately, and for that, Nick was glad. In his older neighbor, Isobeille had found a friend and someone who was happy to share all kinds of information with her. Even more important to him, Nick felt much better about leaving Isobeille during the day, knowing that Mrs. Anderson was there and keeping an eye on her.
During those times when she was not cleaning, cooking, or spending time with Mrs. Anderson, Isobeille dedicated her time to the discovery of new things. Nick showed her how to use his laptop and introduced her to the wonders of Google and Wikipedia. Isobeille was a fast learner; she picked up the use of digital technology very quickly. She happily spent many hours exploring, awed by the sheer amount of knowledge available instantly at her fingertips. Curious by nature, she often lost herself for hours in the virtual world.
When Nick came home in the evening to a wonderful meal, she would tell him all that she had learned that day, and he would share his day as well. They would clean up the kitchen together, then spend their evenings walking around the city, watching a movie, or just talking.
He loved it all, but Nickâs favorite time of day was when they cuddled up together on the couch and Isobeille would fall asleep in his arms. He didnât think heâd ever felt as content as he did in those moments.
âNick.â The familiar voice shocked him out of his reverie as he lifted the phone to his ear.
âGloria.â
âIs everything alright?â she asked, sounding a bit worried. He wasnât used to hearing concern in her voice.
âYeah. Why wouldnât it be?â
âYou havenât called once all week.â
A week? Really? Had it been that long? It seemed like the days were just flying by.
âYeah, well. You said you needed space, right?â he said, remembering the last time theyâd hooked up. Theyâd been seeing each other for six months, and in his mind, at least, things had been going well enough to proceed to the next step - introducing her to the family. Gloria, however, had balked at the idea. Sheâd declined, saying she wasnât ready to take things to a âmeet-the-parentâ level. At the time, Nick told her that he understood, but it had hurt more than heâd let on.
