Chapter 20
âThis is quite some party,â Dylan commented.
âThanks,â Reed looked around the huge ballroom. They were standing near the DJâs stage. Easy-listening, not-too-loud music played, and the room was still lit up, enabling all the party guests to eat and mingle. There was an energetic buzz in the air and the party vibe was building. It would probably reach a peak later when the dance music started.
âYou Knights sure know how to put on an event.â
âI had nothing to do with it.â
Dylan laughed. âExcept pay for it.â
âExcept that.â
âI was wondering how you would outdo the New Yearâs Eve party in the tent,â said Dylan, âbut you have, and spectacularly so.â
âShe has.â Reed pointed his beer bottle towards Olivia. She had made an art out of mingling with people. âThis has been Oliviaâs brainchild,â he replied, and cast his eyes around the room again.
âWho are you looking for?â Dylan asked. Reed turned his attention back to his ever-observant friend. âIâm making sure everyoneâs having a good time.â
âItâs a Knight party,â Dylan grinned, before taking a sip of his beer. âEveryoneâs having a good time. Relax,â he patted Reed on the shoulder. âItâs time you started to have a good time.â
âI am.â He would be now, especially because heâd just seen Jenna reappear. Every so often she would return to the ballroom and hover around the buffet tables at the back. Only this time, Rourke was sniffing around her like a dog in heat. It irritated the heck out of him. It shouldnât have, but it did.
Dylan followed his line of sight. âIf thatâs Jenna Lawson, I canât understand why youâd turn someone like that away. She is hot.â The note of admiration in Dylanâs voice didnât go unnoticed.
âYouâre taken,â Reed reminded him. âYou shouldnât even be looking at anyone, let alone finding anyone but Merry hot.â
âI donât. Iâm only making an observation because Iâve heard so much about this girl you and Rourke keep talking about.â
âWe donât keep talking about her,â Reed corrected him. He was careful about what he said to his friends.
âWell, I was curious to see her.â
âAnd now you have.â Reed glanced at Jenna again. With her hair styled that way, her blue-tipped ends were hidden.
Rourke suddenly appeared out of nowhere and started to talk to her. Reed crossed his arms and watched. He could tell by the way Jenna had folded her arms, by the tilt of her head that she was trying to be patient and polite. She had often been like that with him in the beginning.
âGreat party, Reed,â Merry came up and hugged him.
âThank you, I hope youâre enjoying yourself.â
âI havenât been to any Valentineâs Day balls, and I didnât know what to expect, but this is amazing,â she gushed. âYou and Olivia are exceptional hosts.â
Reed nodded. âThank you, but I believe the honor goes to Olivia. She organized all of this.â
Merry smiled, and he felt an arm around his waist. Suddenly, Olivia was by his side. âThis is a beautiful party,â Merry said to her as Olivia tightened her grip around him and leaned in closer.
