You Will Advance

“Let’s go!” I shouted at the draftees as they raced from the bus. In their standard fitness uniform, black bottoms and a top with the word ‘Army’ written in gold, and their freshly shaven heads, the draftees reminded me of my time in bootcamp.

I had always been weak. Weak minded, weak spirited, and physically weak. But, after high school with nothing to do because I wasn’t too smart and didn’t get a good enough scholarship for college, I joined the Army. I was too afraid to join the Marines and didn’t know enough about the other branches to join. I wanted to get stronger, to be tougher, and it didn’t hurt that I’d have a paying job that kept me away from my poor upbringing.

My mother, a single mom of seven, did her best with us. Four girls, three boys; I was the youngest out of all seven, but I happen to think I made my mother the proudest. At least work wise. My two older sisters and one of my brothers went to church with my mother regularly, so I know she dotes on them regardless of their job status.

When I joined the military almost nine years ago, I joined the Army National Guard. If I’d known then just how decorated my career was going to be, I would’ve never believed it. I spent my first three years on the Guard as a part timer who was also going to school. That’s when I met Ollie, but we didn’t get serious right away. Eventually though, once Ollie and I started seeing each other, I stopped taking classes when I turned twenty-one. I was accepted into the special forces program and graduated as a Green Beret a year later.

I went on two missions as a Green Beret; a trip to Africa to train an elite group in their military with diverse combat operations, and my second mission was in Ukraine, when I lost my eye. As a Green Beret, you need to be in tip top shape, and with a missing eye, my body was no longer in perfect shape.

I was a good Beret. The little girl from the hood who was a weakling had become a Green Beret for one year, but that was snatched from me when I lost my eye. I should’ve been honorably discharged, however, I refused and proved to myself and everyone else that I was just as strong, if not stronger, without my eye.

Some rules cannot be broken, no matter how strong you are or how much stronger you become. My fighting spirit did impress my superiors, and I wasn’t discharged. I was a special case and was recommended to become a drill sergeant. I only worked part time as a drill sergeant for the Army National Guard for two years while I went back to school.

That was when Ollie told me to go active and I reenlisted as an officer. With my schooling and expertise, I was promoted to first lieutenant. Of course, as a parting gift six months later, Ollie got me promoted to captain.
