The next couple of days something were else. Gossip ran through the town like wildfire, and there were stories of every shape and size. Everyone speculated about what Grant Douglas could have intended with Sherri, why she had been kidnapped, and everything else that surrounded the story.

I was just glad it was all over and Sherri was safe and sound.

Needless to say, I didn’t expect her in the shop again any time soon – she deserved rest and to spend some time with her husband before he headed out on a business trip again.

By the following Wednesday, I was getting ready for work when someone knocked on my door. When I opened it, it was Harry and Sherri, standing side-by-side.

“This is a surprise,” I said with a smile and opened the door wider, letting them in. “I can put on coffee if you have the time.”

Harry shook his head. “Unfortunately, we don’t. Well, I don’t. I’m headed out of town again today and I’m here to ask you a favor.”

I frowned and glanced at Sherri, who hadn’t spoken a word, yet.

“Anything,” I said.

“Can I stay here with you for a while?” Sherri blurted out. “With Harry going out of town, I’m too scared to stay alone.”

My heart constricted. “Of course,” I said. “You don’t even have to ask.”

“Thank you,” Harry said, answering on her behalf. “It will help me rest easy that she is safe and taken care of, too.”

I nodded. “She can stay as long as she needs to.”

“I want to start working at the shop again,” Sherri said. “I’m only going to go mad if I continue to stay at home, hiding away from reality.”

“Of course,” I said, nodding. “There are a couple of things to take care of that should keep us plenty busy.”

Harry said his goodbyes, kissing Sherri before he left. When it was just the two of us, I turned to Sherri.

“How about that coffee?” I asked.

Sherri nodded. “That would be great.”

I put on the kettle and made two cups of strong, black coffee.

“We’re just going to have to get back into a routine again,” Sherri said, sounding like she was trying to convince herself. “This isn’t a big deal – it won’t happen again.”

“Not with Grant behind bars,” I agreed.

Sherri wrapped her hands around the coffee cup that I had given her and leaned against my kitchen counter.

“Do you know anything about the case?” She asked softly. “Has Bruce said anything to you?”

I shook my head. “He doesn’t know anything. He asked Grant all kinds of questions, but aside from admitting that he kidnapped you, and tried to steal your car, Grant doesn’t want to share why he did it or what he intended to do if his plan had worked out.”

Grant had tried to steal the car to sell it. He was in financial trouble, apparently, and he’d figured that if Sherri was missing, no one would pay attention until it was too late.

I stopped talking when I realized that Sherri was closing in on herself.
