Chapter Sixteen

“Now, another word of advice,” Shep said as the airboat’s hull thumped against the bank of the tiny island with the warped wooden outhouse standing up in the center like a splinter. “You seen the way out here with your own eyes, but don’t go tryin’ to get out here on your own and find your way without me now. You hear?”

“Wasn’t even thinking about it,” Amanda muttered.

“Good. ’Cause, see, there’s an enchantment on that part of the Everglades we set out from. Right there at the school.” Shep hopped off the boat and tied the rope around the same tree stump Amanda had used three weeks ago. It took everything she had not to stare at it. “Only folks got a certain little permission spell, the way I see it, can find their way out here from the dock. I know you don’t scare, and you don’t wobble, girl, but I reckon even a little spitfire shifter like yourself ain’t gonna find your way out here on your lonesome. Not until you get brought down here next year with the rest of your class, understand?”

“Totally. Yep.” She rubbed her mouth in an attempt to keep it shut. This feels like a super screwed-up dream.

“All right. Come on, now. We made good time, but I ain’t fixin’ to keep whoever’s waitin’ on ya waitin’ any longer.” The wizard trudged up the bank of the island with his hands in his pockets.

To Amanda’s utter disbelief, he walked right past the outhouse and toward the overhanging tree branches on the other side of the island. She pointed at the narrow wooden building. “What’s that?”

Shep’s whistling laugh split through the evening silence. “If you gotta use the necessities, girl, lemme highly recommend against sittin’ on that there john. Lotta folks won’t be too happy bout it.”

“Why not?” Man, this is a hard game to play.

“Leads right down into the kemana, that’s why. Reckon someone oughtta put up an Out of Order sign on the thing, but everyone who comes out here already knows.”

“Oh.” Frowning at the outhouse as she passed it, she asked, “Then what’s it for?”

The wizard snorted. “Overflow. Now come on and stand right here by me. I promise you ain’t seen nothin’ like this before. Get ready.”

When she joined him on the other side of the island, Shep reached up for the lowest-hanging branch of a large oak stretching down over the dry land. He gave the branch a sharp twist, eliciting a loud crack, and a pale golden light illuminated in a circle around them on the ground.

“Welcome to the Everglades kemana, girl.”

Amanda was about to ask him what they had to do next, but the sudden wind forced itself down her throat, and her gut raced up to meet it as the entire circle of dirt and grass beneath them dropped like a stone into the underground city.

She couldn’t catch her breath, and if her feet hadn’t been somehow magically glued to the platform dropping at a frightening pace, she probably would have tried to get off.
