Chapter Twenty-One

Their stay wasn’t all fun and games, though not for lack of desire.

Thanks to the fort Maledict had built, it took them a moment to realize their danger. They’d stopped in a dimension that seemed rather benign. Mild forests, soft grasslands, a lot of round hills… and no animal life that Levi had seen. The fact that the world didn’t seem to have a night cycle was strange, but huge disks floated through the sky and appeared to orbit along a pattern that gave the planet what passed for nightfall.

What none of them had realized at first was that things fell from the underside of those disks. Water, for one, which resulted in an endless cascade of rain that hammered down on the ground below. While the torrent was pervasive, it wasn’t overly damaging. It was the insect-like creatures that fell among the droplets that caused the issues.

They were shaped like beetles, except they had six tentacles in place of legs. The pincers that emerged from their heads sparked with lightning, and when the sun hit them a huge gas bag under their shells inflated and carried them back into the sky.

But while they were on the ground, they gnawed on everything.

Most of them were only about the size of Levi’s thumb, though some were nearly as big as his head. When they’d first began dropping into the camp it had been easy enough to clear them off. The things didn’t have much grip on the crystal, and they couldn’t bite through it. Derp had had a field day eating them. During the hour the bugs fell he’d grown so fat he couldn’t walk. Even Flix had joined in on the feast, but she didn’t indulge quite so intensely.

Levi found that all he had to do was let his aura resonate through the crystals and the mana pressure crushed most of the bugs.

But four hours after their first shower, a second disk passed overhead, and this one lingered for three hours before it moved out of range. The ensuing horde of squirming insects reached their ankles… as did the water. Which was when they realized Maledict’s fortress wasn’t draining. The constant rain, of bugs and water, was starting to fill their base.

Elizabeth summoned several breeds of vines that grew all over the outside of their cabin and along the camp walls. The spiked vines actively attacked the swarms; Levi wasn’t even surprised to see flytrap-like mouths chewing on the things. He and Nox used a few broader spells to try and eliminate the overflow.

The plants absorbed most of the excess moisture as well, which was a definite plus.

Six hours later, yet another eclipse crossed overhead.

They were in the dark for nearly five hours before it was gone. Levi summoned several torch-sized blazes of demon fire and set them to evaporating the water. The steam was pervasive, however, and damaged Liz’s plants. The insects crawled over everything, and it was a constant struggle to keep from being nibbled to death.

Silvia’s single attempt to clear the things away had left her screaming in pain.
