Chapter Twelve

Sandy

Sleep eluded me. Thoughts and emotions whirled like the Sajave dust devils I had yet to see. My mother was coming to Sajave. Nothing demonstrated her commitment to the resort more than that. C-Force had tremendous capability and resources, but Quint didn’t know my mother as well as I did. She would be prepared for any eventuality. A cyborg wouldn’t be able to get within a dozen feet of her before he’d be tackled by Secret Service and/or several enforcers. Nobody on two planets was better protected than her.

He should realize I was probably the only person who could separate her from the pack of guards. Why was he being so stubborn? Did he still not trust me? Hadn’t I proven myself? I’d handed over my journal.

I punched my pillow and flopped over. Maybe the diary had ruined my chances with Quint. He’d received too much information too soon. Discovering how messed up I was might have scared him off.

I was a different person now, but only time would prove I wouldn’t relapse again. He might be a cyborg with extraordinary abilities, but he couldn’t see inside my soul. Nobody could—except maybe the alien sand if it had the telepathic powers Geo-Tech suspected it did.

Then again, maybe distrust wasn’t the issue. Maybe he was trying to protect me. I did have a target on my head. My mother had tried to arrest me and then kidnap me. Her enforcers had nearly killed me. My attendance at the groundbreaking would draw resources from the operation. I damn sure didn’t want to do that.

This is not a rejection. Except his outright refusal to consider my help felt like one. My emotions were raw. I rode a roller coaster of hope and disappointment. When he’d said the close proximity was getting to both of us, my hopeful heart had taken that to mean maybe he desired me after all. But then he’d dashed all possibility by reiterating there could never be anything between us.

I still wanted to help! I couldn’t let my mother stomp all over an alien species so she could build a resort. She’d caused so much misery in the country, and now she would spread it to another world.

I crossed my fingers that whatever plan C-Force had would work.

I rolled onto my back. If I didn’t get some shut-eye soon, I’d risk oversleeping and miss saying goodbye, and there would be no telling when I’d see him again. At the very least, it would be several days.

Or forever.

Everything could change in a blink of an eye. This could be groundbreaking in more ways than one. The political tide could shift and secure Sajave’s future. My mother’s power might be neutralized. She might be removed from office. Then, there’d be no reason for me to remain under protective custody. And I’d never see Quint again. I had to be awake in the morning to see him.

I gotta get some sleep! I flung off the covers. Maybe some warm milk would help.
