ESTADIO SANTIAGO BERNABÉU

(Real Madrid Bernabéu Stadium)

Estadio Santiago Bernabéu

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is a soccer stadium. It was inaugurated in 1947 and is owned by Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. It has a current capacity of 85,454 spectators. El Bernabéu, renamed in honor of the club’s former chairman, Santiago Bernabéu, is one of the world’s most famous soccer stadiums. It hosted the European Cup final in 1957, 1969 and 1980 and the UEFA Champions League Final in 2010. The finals for the 1964 European Nations’ Cup and the 1982 FIFA World Cup were also held at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Unlike most European football clubs, Real Madrid’s members (socios) have owned and operated the club since it started.

Santiago Bernabéu became president of Real Madrid in 1945. Under his presidency, the club, its stadium and its training facilities were rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War. Beginning in 1953, he started a strategy of signing world-class players from abroad, the most famous being Alfredo di Stéfano (an Argentine player, widely considered as one of the greatest players of all time). In 1955, Bernabéu helped create a tournament of invited teams from around Europe that would eventually become what today is known as the UEFA Champions League. It was under Bernabéu’s guidance that Real Madrid established itself as a major force in both Spanish and European soccer. Real Madrid is today the world’s most honored club with 32 Spanish League Cups, 18 King’s Cups, and 9 Champions League Cups. In 2000, FIFA declared Real Madrid the “Best Club of the 20th Century.”

Unlike a company, it is not possible to purchase shares in the Real Madrid Football Club. It is an association with members, called “socios.” They elect a president and representatives every four years. The club has approximately 93,000 socios, of which 20,000 are under 14 years old. During most home matches the approximately 63,000 season ticket holders occupy the majority of the seats in the stadium. To become a season ticket holder one must first be a socio, or club member. Real Madrid holds many long-standing rivalries, most notably El Clásico with FC Barcelona and El Derbi madrileño with Atlético Madrid. Florentino Pérez, a Spanish businessman, civil engineer and former politician, is the current president of Real Madrid Football Club. It was under Florentino Pérez’s first presidency (2000–2006) that Real Madrid started a remarkable turnaround to become one of the most important and successful teams in sports. Like Bernabéu’s signing of di Stéfano, Pérez signed the world’s most valuable players such as Zinédine Zidane, Luís Figo, Ronaldo and David Beckham. In 2009, Florentino Pérez regained Real Madrid’s presidency. Pérez continued with expanding the Real Madrid brand internationally and signing famous players such as Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo. Carlos M. de Albornoz is the current economic general director of Real Madrid and is in charge of the Club’s corporate direction. Real Madrid has the highest revenues and valuation of any team in any sport in any country!
