Chapter 11

Gogs ran out into the clearing where they’d just been and raised their fists. Jon’s blood boiled and thumped between his temples. His urge to protect his mate threw out all rational thought. Revenge, he wanted revenge.

He did a swoop over the clearing and let out another stream of fire. Gogs burst into flames and spun around, bumping into each other or running into the jungle. Their high-pitched screeches didn’t faze him. They deserved it. No one but no one threatened his mate.

Burn Burn Burn

No mercy pumped in his veins.

Scarlett’s warm breath rushed over his back. He glanced over his shoulder. Scarlett’s eyes were huge, showing around the whole iris. Her red hair flew around her flushed face, and she clutched his neck tightly. He could feel her frantic beating heart. He hoped to the Fates she’d trust him. No way in hell would he ever drop her.

But unfortunately, she didn’t know that.

Jon flew higher into the sky, away from the shrieking Gogs and the heat of the raging fire. Trees crackled. The antenna turned red and melted. Black smoke swirled into the sky. His keen sense of smell inhaled the scent of burning fur, wood, and leaves.

He stole another glance. Beads of sweat dripped down Scarlett’s temples, and her eyes watered. His chest tightened. Or were they tears?

She pressed her knees against his ribs, and her arms wrapped around his neck. He had to get her to safety, even if she didn’t think she was in danger.

He followed Hoss who headed to the top of a rocky mountain and landed on a flat ledge that led into a cave. Jon landed alongside him, hoping nothing dangerous lived in the dark cave.

Scarlett slid off him and stumbled. “Well, that was a first.” She wiped her sleek brow.

Agnes jumped off Hoss and glared. “What the hell do you think you were doing, you overgrown lizard?” She clasped Scarlett’s arm. “You could have killed your mate. This was the first she’s ever rode a dragon, just in case you forgot that little fact.”

Jon shifted and clenched his teeth. “I would never do anything to endanger my mate.”

Agnes rolled her eyes. “Could have fooled me.”

He looked at Scarlett who didn’t meet his gaze. A lump of fear lodged in his throat.

Hoss went from dragon to man. He punched Jon in the shoulder hard. “What the hell do you think you were doing?”

Jon slammed against the rocky wall and winced. “I was protecting––”

Hoss jammed his finger in his chest. “No, you weren’t. You wanted revenge. Your temper is out-of-control. I will not risk Agnes or Scarlett getting ripped apart because you can’t control your need to mate.”

Scarlett shuffled her feet.

“Don’t push me,” Jon said.

Hoss glared. “Or what?” He jerked his arm toward the clearing below. “You going to do another bonfire up here. Thanks to your little incident, the damn antenna’s melted, and the Gogs will be back in full force. The whole place will guarded.”

Jon ran his shaking hand through his hair. “I wasn’t thinking.
