Olan choked on a laugh. “Yeah. You’d have figured it out when you got her pants down—and discovered she had no working parts.”

A rumble of hard male laughter swept the circle of men as everyone grinned at Junkie. “I don’t know how you’re supposed to tell them apart,” Junkie grumbled, grinning at the same time. “How is it that you always know, Danjer?”

“Their skin tones are too gray,” Danjer explained shortly.

“Skin tones?” Junkie shrugged expansively as he laughed and shook his head at his friends. “May I?” he asked Saxon as he reached for the keytar. Passing Saxon’s keytar around with careful reverence, the men took turns on it, handling the sleek instrument as they would a beautiful woman, dragging worshipping fingers down its long, polished length.

When it became clear that the impromptu jam session was going to last a while, they moved back to within two hundred feet of the tallicwood grove. Three of them ran back into town and returned with Shofu food and three cases of lemonale while the others dug up some groundwood and built a fire inside the circle of their bikes. The men sprawled on their bikes, their legs spread, their cockstones sparkling in the glow of the snapping fire as the afternoon sun paced across the sky. Junkie grinned at Pink when he caught her staring at the three flat pieces of webbed agate that made a triangle at the base of his fly.

Danjer took a turn on the keytar when it came his way. The dark Earther was easily as talented as Saxon. Wild and energetic, the music he created was as exotic as the planet from which he hailed. But, by far, the most accomplished musician was Jake, the slender man who had paled earlier when the men had been talking about Saxon’s injury—and Danjer’s revenge. He could keep a dozen instruments going at once—with unexpected flairs of brilliance—fifes where you least expected them, cellos taking the main melody. What he could do with the drums was pure genius. They did some of their old songs then some of their newer songs then everybody’s songs until the sun dipped behind the mountains and the evening deteriorated into songs about sex. A dry storm swept through without offering up a drop of moisture. They watched the lightning bang around in the nearby tallicwood trees as they emptied three cases of lemonale while sprawled a safe distance from the natural lightning rods. 66

With his instrument back in his hands, Saxon keyed a few bars and smiled. “One more,” he told the group, starting into a slow melody.

The men groaned. “Not a fucking love song,” they complained.

“One of the ladies in the audience requested it,” Saxon said quietly, his gaze fixed on Pink’s face. “Danjer?” he prompted, but the dark man shook his head with a cursory smile. The look Saxon gave his friend was one of reproach. “Well, it’s Danjer’s song,” he spoke, “but I’ll see if I can pull it off.
