Out-of-work National Football League player Dennis Smith got the tone indicating he had an incoming communication. He blinked twice quickly to see who it was from and was delighted to see his agent’s pic pop up in his video stream. He blinked twice quickly again to answer. Without waiting for a hello, he said, “See, I told you someone would pick me up for the season. With all the advances in medicine today, forty-eight years old is still young for a professional athlete. So who’s interested?”
“Easy, Tiger, it’s not what you think,” his agent replied. “I have an offer from old man Jessup from the Cowboys, but it’s not to play again.”
“So what does he want?”
“I’m not sure how to say this. He, ah . . . He, ah . . .”
“What?”
“OK, let me just say it: He knows you haven’t been smart with your money. And he doesn’t need you to play. He’s got young guys now who are half bionic. But he has a very unusual offer for you.”
“What? Come on already.”
“Well, he knows from the times he spent in the locker room how well endowed you are . . . and . . . he wants . . . your penis. It’s a status symbol, and he’s willing to pay eighty million credits if you’re willing to do a transplant with him. And another five million credits to sign a nondisclosure and keep it secret.”
If that sounds farfetched to you, you’re not really thinking about the speed of the advances in transplants, technology, and medicine. And what happens when fantasies are obtainable realities? (Not to mention what happens when vapid people get large amounts of riches.)
We’ve already seen the first hand, leg, and face transplants, and we’ve been transplanting organs for decades. The first human organs have now been created with 3D printers. This is a field (and area of commerce) that is just beginning to heat up.
Remember: If it’s not this, it’ll be something else. The greatest opportunities will be recognizing what the something else will be.
