EIGHT

Day Four was a surprise. Joe was gone when Annie woke. He’d left the Scrabble Board open on the counter with two words spelled out. DON’T GO.

A second holder with seven letters on it had been left across the board. She studied the combination, then unscrambled Joe’s word, forming the only possible combination: TOGETHER. She smiled at the way he’d used to communicate. It might be a game, but the message was real. But when the hours passed and he hadn’t returned, she began to worry.

Annie finally called the one person who could possibly help. “Mac, what do you know about Joe’s friend Jack?”

There was a silence and a ruffle of papers. “Not much. Jack was Joe’s roommate on the road. He even bought a house across the lake from Joe. They were close friends, party animals, apparently.”

“But Jack’s dead. What happened?”

“The report just says a boating accident. He’d been drinking and drove his speedboat under the dock at a marina. He was killed. There’s no obvious connection, but his death contributed to Joe’s downward spiral. Everybody attributed Joe’s deteriorating performance on the ball field to losing his favorite receiver. Then Joe began to lose confidence in himself. Why, is this important?”

“Yes, I think it is. Jack’s death was even more traumatic than you know. Joe told me he knew Jack had been drinking and he let him drive the boat. He holds himself responsible for not stopping his friend.”

“That explains a lot, Annie. His knees were already bad and his arm was losing its zip. Jack’s death must have been the emotional straw that broke the camel’s back. But his telling you is a good sign.”

“Maybe,” Annie agreed. “Maybe I shouldn’t have pushed him away. Now he’s gone.”

“Pushed him away? What does that mean, Annie?”

“He kissed me, Mac, and I kissed him back. I know I’m not supposed to get close, but just for a moment I wanted him, Mac. I even offered him a bribe to cooperate.”

“Is that what you want, Annie?”

“What I want? What do you mean? You know what happened to me and how far I’ve come. You warned me not to expect a normal life and I don’t.”

“No, Annie. I told you that the rest of your life is up to you. You’re important to me. You’ve come a long way. Maybe Joe will have to help you find the rest of your way. Sometimes we don’t know where we’re going until we get there.”

“You’re not making any sense, Mac. Joe can’t even find his own way. He sure can’t help me. Even if he could, it wouldn’t work. I got up this morning and he was gone.”

“There must be something you can do, Annie,” Mac argued. “What did you disagree about?”

“Attending a fund-raiser, a dinner dance.”

“You want to go? Aren’t you worried about being recognized?”

“No. After all, you’ve told me over and over that I’m a very different person. Sure, I’ve avoided the spotlight, but now, if it meant helping Joe, I’d go.”

“Then do it.
