Locating Your Subject

Oxeye daisies occur in a variety of habitats and are commonly encountered blooming in fields, meadows, and roadsides throughout the summer months. The yellow center surrounded by white petals makes them easily distinguishable in a field of flowers.

Shooting Your Subject & Photographic Process

The facing-page image was shot lying on the ground, with the camera hand-held and positioned 1.8 feet away from the subject on a steep upward angle of approximately 45 degrees. This angle was chosen to break up the white background of clouds with a green row of trees positioned along the image horizon, echoing the curve of the flower.

By experimenting with various shooting angles, I was able to capture the more interesting underside of composite flowers—the side unseen. Highlighting the whorled bracts of the flower’s underside abstractly captures the beauty of the Oxeye daisy. Adding to the mood of this image is the monochromatic play between the white clouds and the petals, which further accentuates the greens and yellows of the bracts.
