These two images of the terrestrial orchid Bletilla striata demonstrate how a minor change in camera position can have a major impact on an image’s background. In the first image, the blossoms are positioned against a number of other blossoms in the background. Even at a medium aperture, the background blossoms have enough definition to be distracting and take attention away from the main subject. For the second image I moved a few inches to the right in order to eliminate these distracting blossoms from behind the subject.

Backgrounds can also be a major help in adding impact to an image. Colors that contrast in either value or tone tend to make a subject jump out. Placing a light subject against a darker background helps to isolate the subject. Similar flowers or parts of flowers out of focus will add depth and interest to an image. Before making adjustments, look at the background and consider the effect it has in the image. Try making changes to see if they help or hurt the image.
