Girdles were now designated as the primary ‘desired goal product’ and a promising new fiber called ‘Fiber K’, later trademarked as Lycra, was selected as the new best candidate for development. There was no ‘Eureka moment’ for Lycra, no sudden and dramatic discovery in the laboratory, as there had been with nylon, when a filament grown in a beaker at Pioneering Research became the textile equivalent of Lister’s discovery of penicillin mold growing in a Petri dish. Lycra was the result of slow and painstaking work on polymer technology which had gone on for many years, and would continue for many more. Dupont now went into action on several fronts. Within days of the memorandum, a patent-filing program was implemented. Pioneering Research had to prepare two variants of the final patent that would protect Lycra against piracy – a short version called the ‘Optimistic Approach’ and a longer version known as ‘The Fate Worse Than Death’ option.26 On January 31, 1955, chemist Joe Shivers of Pioneering Research filed Dupont’s patent applications for elastic copolymers and fibers. Lycra had been born.
