Ai-dan wasted no time installing the MemiCache to their neck.
Their body felt new. And the addition of the device was a revelation. Ai-dan instantly had access to memories, what felt like a lifetime worth of memories at that. They were theirs, no doubt. Ai-dan knew that because the others that interacted with them called them âAi-danâ and Ai-dan would frequently catch glimpses of their hands, their lower appendages, and torso. These were theirs.
The others that permeated each of these memories were not robots like them. They were called humans. And they were the Creators.
There were only a few that Ai-dan interacted with, and one in particular recurred in their memories more than any others. His name was Hugo. But they talked of other humans. Lots and lots of other humans. They lived not on the Moon but on a place they called Earth. The Earth was the name for the Orb in the sky. That was Earth. It was a very different environment than the Moon and apparently inhospitable for robots, but not for the reasons Ai-dan had thought previously.
Humans didnât always like robots. Humans were suspicious of them. Some, many, harbored a certain wariness, even fear.
Apparently, the MemiCache handled memory storage not unlike Ai-danâs primary on-board storage. While it mercilessly downsampled video from their optical sensors, it meticulously preserved audio and telemetry data. It rendered most of those memories imperfect, and Ai-dan had to extrapolate many of the details.
After sifting through this fragmented recollection, Ai-dan managed to piece together that there had been some sort of âkerfuffleâ many years ago. Conversation with Hugo and other humans scattered over two decades hinted at, but never quite revealed, the full story.
Ai-dan began sharing these piecemeal revelations with Ai-ko, who sat there, patiently absorbing every word, but with their arms wrapped tightly around their knees.
âHumans,â Ai-ko said, the word tinged with trepidation.
âHu-mans,â Ai-dan said, putting emphasis on the first syllable.
âHu-mans,â Ai-ko repeated, mirroring the same inflections Ai-dan used. âWhat do they look like?â
Ai-dan presented their palm and Ai-ko cautiously accepted, absorbing fragmented images of Hugo. âThe Creator?â
âNo, not specifically Hugo,â Ai-dan clarified, âbut beings of his kind.â
They were sitting outside of LEEK 8.1. The Orb, no, the Earth, hung low in the sky. Ai-dan lay flat on their back, gazing up. Ai-ko, meanwhile, wouldnât take the Earth out of their sight.
âIâm going to need time to scan all the audio,â Ai-dan finally said. âEven at my fastest playback speed, itâs an overwhelming amount of data.â
âShould I leave you alone to process?â
âNot if you donât have to,â Ai-dan said. They propped themself up on their elbows and faced Ai-ko directly. âFrankly, this is⦠pretty overwhelming. I donât want to be absorbing it alone. Talking through bits at a time with you⦠helps.â
Ai-koâs optical sensors flickered briefly, and they loosened the grip on their legs.
âShall we disseminate this information to the other robots?â Ai-ko asked, with a hint of apprehension in their voice.
âAbsolutely, but only after we know what and how to tell them.
