Winnie slithered through the gathering crowd. Someone had tampered with Zazz's files. She was the victim here, and it wasn't her fault Gavin fired Sarr. He was crazy, that was clear. Or maybe the CEO was right and Sarr should have discovered the spy long ago. But a lot of people seemed sorry to see her go.
Sarr stood at the bottom of stairs leading up to the spaceport lobby where guests clustered on the fancy mosaic floor, waiting for jetways to convey them to transfer capsules. Xavier carried her bag, hugging it to his chest as if that would keep her on the Moon.
A growing horde backed up in the lower level corridor. A hum of conversation echoed as rumors leapt from person to person. There were a few tears, but also wide-eyed disbelief. No one ever left Eight-C so abruptly.
Sarr retrieved her bag and climbed a few steps. "Thank you, everyone. This is a fine team and I know that's not going to change. Please offer Xavier Chul the same cooperation you gave to me."
Her eyes roamed the crowd and settled on Bertram, who stood a head taller than anyone near him. Her lips flattened in a grim smile.
Sarr was about to return to Earth like any other grunt. She'd travel on the Widdershins, which meant hitching a ride to the cruiser with the tourists. Pausing on the stairs gave Sarr a last moment to wave goodbye, and then she was gone.
A cacophony of chatter filled the corridor, and Winnie caught repeated variations of the same questions. "What happened?" and "What's a Black Satellite?"
Cool corridor air hit Winnie's sweat-slicked skin and she shivered. She trotted the whole way to Rotunda and jumped the last few steps to the lower level. A bus waited. Eight-C managers could take care of themselves. She was on a recovery leave and planned to enjoy herself.
On the resort's employee level, she yanked her bag from her sleeping tube, relinquished the space on the dorm's occupancy board, and headed upstairs. If the Lunarian hotel had vacancies, she deserved a little luxury.
Her breathing relaxed. Eight-C's security staff should have noticed a spy long before an Orbital Services pilot did, and Gavin's reaction wasn't her fault. She'd never said Sarr should be fired. A bounce returned to Winnie's steps. She tossed her bag in the air and caught it at the proper angle of down on the Lunarian.
At the rear of the casino, doors retracted into their faux marble frame, and Winnie entered the hotel lobby. Cleaning bots whirred across the mosaic patterns on the floor. The space was a lot like the Tower lobby she'd seen before, with rooms running back instead of up. A glance over her shoulder confirmed The Great's presence. A copy of the director's portrait hung on the bulkhead.
A woman wearing a silver jacket stood behind a polished counter between two ewers of gladiolas, fresh yellow blossoms open below buds at the tops of the flower stalks. She smiled as Winnie walked up.
