Dear René,

I respect you very much as well as love you. Your letters are “adorable.” I love you very much even if it doesn’t seem like it. I just need the fact that you exist. I will tell you when the date will be fixed for my journey next fall to the USA. Above all, be well. I still love you. Of course. Yes. The lettre of septembre was in my nitrous oxide archive since a very long time. Pardon me!

Dear Raoul,

J. E. Tolly, Jr. (my younger boss) and Professor Lerner called me in today. They both reviewed the paper David and I wrote on the methane production. They asked to speak to both of us—David and me together. I knew something was up. I had written the paper: terse but to the point and loaded with information, especially in the tables. There are definitive cycles, of course, and they plot nicely on a sine curve. Although I wrote the paper, David edited it closely, improved it in a hundred small ways. Of course David gave me all his data, without which it would not have been a paper. So we went together, wondering what Tolly and Lerner wanted. We saw right away. Lerner said first thing that our work was supported by his grant. Tolly said, “Yes, and David is working off another grant which is in my name.” I figured it out immediately. They should have just said from the beginning that they wanted their names on our paper. Fair enough. When Lerner had the nerve to “wonder” if he should be first author I nearly agreed, wanted to get out of that office as soon as possible. David Barclay, shy as he may be around the big bosses, then showed them his true colors. “Are you joking?” David asked bluntly. “René planned the experiments, executed them, took the chromatograph into the field, roped me into doing the plate counts, wrote the paper, and now we’ve submitted it to you. She must be first author. I must be second author. Everything else is fine.”

Well, they backed down, the shits. We are adding their names because they provided the money, and they’ll need credit for it next time they apply for grants. I’m grateful to David and proud of him. We’ll send the paper in very soon. I’m just missing a reference or two, which reminds me, you never did send me the green report from your laboratory. I need that as a reference for this paper, too, and would dearly love to have it soon. You said you would send it months ago, last autumn even. Oh, Raoul, do you ever do what you say you’ll do? I keep feeling you will. You must.

Oh, please, next September, come soon. I faint with impatience. Please, Gautier, come to me in September. I can’t wait.

Love,

René
