LUKA
An hour later, Luka had set up the tent under the pavilion. Charlotte was feeding Maybelle, singing softly to her in a way that made him remember being small himself.
He had gathered a ripe fruit and sat down beside her to peel and prepare it with his laser knife. It was much like the Terran mangafruits heâd eaten, but much larger and juicier, and even the smell was sweeter. Charlotte had called it a mango, so it was probably an Old Earth strain that had remained untouched for all this time.
She smiled at him as he worked, but didnât stop singing.
Maybelle was tired again. She tried to keep eye contact with her mother, but her eyelids kept drifting shut.
âShe sleeps so much,â he observed. âI know itâs the nature of Imberian whelps, but it used to scare me.â
Charlotte nodded, letting her voice fade a little and then ending her song.
Maybelleâs tiny mouth fell off the bottle and Charlotte lifted her to her chest.
âYou donât have to wake up,â she crooned. âBut you do have to burp, or youâll have a bad dream.â
Maybelle tried to snuggle in, but Charlotte rubbed her back in circles and sure enough, an enormous burp came out.
âThere it was,â Charlotte told her. âNow you can go to sleep.â
Luka watched as she carried the little one to the tent.
If he hadnât known, he would have thought she had been Maybelleâs mother since she emerged from her pod. Their relationship was so natural, so easy.
He thought back to his own first days trying to care for the wrinkly, pink whelp and shook his head.
âWhat?â Charlotte asked, crawling back out of the tent without the baby.
âYouâre good with her,â he said simply.
âSheâs an easy baby,â Charlotte said dismissively. But her cheeks were pink with pleasure.
Gods, but he wanted to pleasure the rest of her, too.
âMango?â he offered, holding out a piece of the luscious fruit.
âYes, please,â she said, taking it.
Their hands brushed, and it was all he could do not to take her in his arms.
Her eyes flicked up to his.
âThereâs something I need to tell you,â he blurted out before he could lose control.
âOkay,â she said, sitting back and eating the bit of mango he had given her. âSo good.â She closed her eyes and moaned with pleasure.
Luka wondered how many generations it had been since anyone had tasted something like this. And tried not to wonder how sweet she would taste.
He took a deep breath and prayed to all the gods for control.
âHow much do you know about dragons?â he asked.
She frowned, and looked thoughtful for a moment.
âYouâre excellent warriors,â she said. âObviously. Youâre fierce and loyal. And you have enhanced senses.â
âAll true,â he said, nodding. âAnything else?â
She shook her head, but she was blushing again.
She knew.
But he would tell her anyway. For all he knew, what she had learned was the legends referred to in the romantic fairy tales, or the nonsense on the sex message boards.
âDragons have an unusual mating practice,â he told her. âWe take one mate, for life.
