Scientists estimate the path of the Sentar shower will take it through Amabale’s atmosphere, but not for approximately two million years. The payout to those wagering a rock from this year’s shower will deviate off course and enter atmo is three hundred and seventeen thousand unicreds for a stake of ten unicreds, according to Jack Potts, the sector’s most popular bookmaker.

“Last jump,” Jake said, weariness dragging out the words.

They’d been inside the shower for two days, and Lian’s skin felt raw, scoured thin by the stress of the leaps into the rock-dotted darkness and the long hours of waiting between jumps—and the times when the jumps flowed together, the Mama Rose barely settling before she hoisted herself back into space. One breath too deep and he’d explode.

They’d slept, eaten, bathed, but separately. Even on the longest wait, close to six hours, there had been no suggestion they repeat the lovemaking that’d filled the first interval so pleasantly.

Except that wasn’t the word to describe what they’d done. Lian had enjoyed it when he’d let himself forget what he was doing, which wasn’t often. Sex. With not one man, but two, and men who intimidated him with their assurance. They were competent, self-sufficient, and they’d included him as if they trusted him to be the same.

He’d fallen short. He knew it, and their kindness in not mentioning his failures had left him squirming inwardly with embarrassment. Scraping Rill’s cock with his teeth hadn’t been his only misstep or even the worst. Maybe that was why there hadn’t been a repeat. Common sense told him the situation wasn’t conducive to slaking sexual needs and they were sensibly concentrating on getting through the shower in one piece. His insecurities whispered they’d thrown him a pity fuck as casually as they’d toss a beggar a credit.

Whispers could be louder than screams spoken directly in his ear.

Lian steeled himself for a final interface with the ship’s computer, head aching so much even nodding hurt. He’d never realized how difficult it was to use the tektat this way, overriding a system complex in its own right and nudging it in different directions. The computer wanted to take its time calculating what needed to be done now, and the addition of the crystals to the fuel line was a variable it didn’t seem capable of factoring in when it made those calculations.

“Sit down before you fall.”

Lian let Jake guide him to a chair because his vision was too blurry to make the task a simple one. “Thank you.”

“Take a painkiller.”

“I will, I promise, but not now.” At home, he’d have meekly headed for the nearest med-unit, but two days of being the one making the decisions had shown him he didn’t have to acquiesce to every suggestion or obey every order. Jake allowed him plenty of leeway. His world had broken apart on Bitra, but he found himself less than eager to rebuild it exactly as it’d been before. Sex was definitely going to have its place and so was a measure of independence.
