“What the hell just happened?” screeched Malby, his pulse rifle still kicking out warm cartridges.

Deacon and his men seemed incapable of speech. They stared dumbly at the dead Da’hune on the ground. Dabs and Jiang seemed to share some unspoken message, like they were just forming the arguments they were about to embark on.

Lucky didn’t care about any of that.

He began shoving the Da’hune over, but the dead weight of the thing was enormous. “Malby, help me turn him over,” he said, then spat. He still tasted the bile in his mouth. He knew his face was covered in the black liquid.

Malby stared for several seconds before the words seemed to seep through his mind. He stepped forward, still apparently in shock, and helped Lucky turn the Da’hune on its side.

Lucky began clawing around in the exposed guts until he again found the soft edge of the orb. He carefully slid it free and fell back on his ass, the T’kat’ke in his lap.

“I wouldn’t put that thing near my balls, dude,” said Malby.

“…Asshole…” said a faraway voice. Lucky looked around for a moment. “… Hear me?…”

“Rocky?”

“Yes, cocksucking dickmunch. I’ve been yelling at you for a full minute!”

“Uh, well, yeah, OK.” Lucky echoed back helpfully. His mind was a muddled blur. “I think something about that signal—”

“No shit, you think? That Dalmuk signal is messing with us bad.”

“It’s not supposed to work,” Lucky echoed, although technically, he wasn’t really sure how true that was of himself and whatever was going on in his head. But in general, the entire point of everything that was happening now was predicated on one single fact: that the Da’hune were now immune to the efforts of the Dalmuk.

That seemed to be entirely wrong.

He closed his eyes and held the T’kat’ke carefully in both hands. He felt the buzz in his body, and somehow, while it added some low static in his mind, it also managed to alleviate some of the spikes of hate that still seemed to be coursing through him.

He wasn’t sure if he was channeling the power of the T’kat’ke, or if it was channeling him. He felt the pull of the corridor nearby. The T’kat’ke wanted to pass through.

Finally, Dabs found her voice. “Thees.”

The single word seemed to open the floodgates for everyone who’d sat in stunned silence.

“They’re supposed to be immune,” said Jiang, stunned. “The entire invasion. It’s all based on them being immune.”

“I know,” snapped Dabs, pursing her lips. She spun around, her eyes wild and roving around quickly, like she was running through a million options in her head. “We have to get this back fast.”

Jiang shook her head. “We have to tell them now. We have to tell the invasion force.”

“They know,” snapped Dabs.

“How?”

“They broadcast, they broadcast!” Dabs snapped. “It’s a hive mind. It’s how we got feeds from the android sleeves. It’s the same tech the Queen Mother used. It’s how they work. The hive will have this. They’ll know.”

“Well, good, then,” Jiang began.

“No, not good!” snapped Dabs.
