The cannon barrel shifted around, staying locked on Lucky as the walker traversed a particularly large boulder, its body swaying with the effort. It would only be another moment before it was over the rock and would have a clear shot at him.
He pulled his pulse gun out and flipped it over to the grenade launcher. He couldnât do anything like what Miggs could do with her sexy gun, but from this close range even his grenade launcher could sow some mayhem.
He didnât aim at the tank. Instead, he aimed at the big rock it was trying to climb over. He fired three grenades into it in rapid succession. The walker tank might be impervious to the grenades that Miggs had fired at it, but the ground underneath it was a different story.
The rock exploded with surprising fury, at least to Lucky, sending shards of rock-like shrapnel everywhere. He felt it pelting his face and body, tearing into his combat gear.
He felt his skyskimmer thrusters die. Either the dust or the rock had killed them. He stumbled back, falling to the ground and rolling over.
Then he rolled again.
He hadnât realized just how steep the terrain had become here. He was rolling backward comically now.
He finally came to a stop, bent halfway around a particularly large rock. Pain bloomed over his body, and he was happy to feel another combat cocktail hit him.
The grappling legs of the walker were suddenly grasping at nothing but air as the rock below it was pulverized. For a moment, it seemed like it wasnât going to work. Then Lucky heard something like a metallic squeal, and the first set of the walkerâs legs collapsed underneath the tank, overcome by the sheer weight of the tank and the inability to find anything to grapple onto. A moment later the rest of the legs on the side closest to Lucky gave out, and the tank started to list badly.
For a moment, it looked like it was perfectly balanced, like a ballerina on her toes; then it tipped over and spilled itself, rolling on its side, then over completely, crushing and mangling the cannon on top.
But the momentum and the steepness of the hill had it now. It kept rolling over, coming back around to upright again for a moment. The grappling legs were useless now. It rolled again.
And then Lucky realized it was picking up even more speed as it rolled, over and over, down the side of the rocky hill.
Lucky tried to scramble to his feet, hoping to crawl over the loose rock and get clear of the path of the tumbling tank.
But he couldnât move. His right leg was completely shredded. Now he realized what all the red lights in his HUD were about.
âRocky, a little help!â
Just then, something smashed into the ground next to him, and he assumed that it must be the fighters coming to finish him off.
But the blast was a blessing in disguise. It threw him loose of the rocks and sent him flopping over on his stomach.
