Chapter 8

The First Shot of the War

As Captain Tansky entered the quarantine room, Commander Snider stood and brought himself to attention but did not salute.

“At ease, Commander,” Tansky said, but he stayed at attention. She tapped on the data pad to start a recorder function and said, “Okay, for the record please state your name rank and serial number.

“Lt. Commander Token Snider, Serial number 653-729-61 Alpha 29,” he stated.

“It is so entered into the formal record,” The Captain said signing off on it on the pad and then read from the pad. “Under the Articles of War, in the Alliance directives and ratified in 2278, prisoners of war will only be required to give their name, rank and serial number, and may not be expected or required to give any additional information and violation of that rule will be considered a war crime by the officer over the detention.” She put the pad to her side and asked, “Are we at war, Commander?” She paused to measure his response which was to look at the wall past her and give no reaction. “There has been no declaration of war that I’m aware of, and you would think fleet command would tell the commander of the third fleet if we were at war, so I will ask you again, Commander. Do you have any reason to believe that we are at war?” Snider said nothing.

Mitchell and I had the full resources of the medical quarantine room active. We were monitoring and recording everything, from the dilation of his pupils, heart rate, pulse, breathing, and even his sweat glands. With every question the Captain asked him we looked for variations in his bio readings. Some of the questions I prepared for her to ask were ones we already had answers to, and others were things we needed to know. By comparing the responses to both, I was hoping we could move a step closer to confirming our assumptions.

“You can stand at attention or at ease, it makes no difference to me, Commander,” Tansky said, matter of factly as she read from the pad for the first set of questions she would ask.

“Did you do your basic training at Northfork?”

He said nothing.

“Was your first assignment the T.S.S. Franklin?”

He said nothing.

“Was Captain Gayle Rogers in command of the Franklin when you served?”

He just stared ahead and said nothing.

“Was Commander Klippon your Executive officer on the Franklin?”

He said nothing, but we got a slight jump in his heart rate and pupil dilation. I was going to send a message to the Captain on her pad to press further about that association, but she must of picked up on that fact on her own because she was already doing it.

“Did you know Commander Klippon before you were assigned to the Franklin? Have you been in contact with Klippon at any time since your assignment on that ship ended 15 years ago?”

She paused as she studied his face. A small bead of sweat ran down the side of his cheek.
