Chapter Nineteen

Mila

“You want to come to our place this evening?” Ethan asks as he hands me the coffee he started picking up for me every morning. The ones at the refreshments table aren’t exactly impressive, and he insisted on picking up a fresh one from the coffee shop just next to his place. And hey, I’m not complaining—anything that allows me to drink something that doesn’t taste like dishwater every morning is a welcome change.

“I’d love that,” I reply, already smiling at the thought. I love spending time with Ethan and Eleanor. It is exactly the break I need from the chaos and intensity of being on this set for hours on end every day. A little slice of normalcy in the last place I ever thought I would find it, but hey, sometimes you have to take the wins where they come, right?

“I’m going to be finishing up later than you, but if you don’t mind waiting, I can drive you down?” he suggests.

“Sure,” I agree with a nod. “I have a few things to work on, so it’ll probably do me good to spend some more time on set.”

“See you then,” he remarks, flashing me a smile.

I feel a little fizz in my chest as he heads off. It’s hard to believe that so much has changed between us in such a short amount of time but, since he introduced me to his daughter, it’s like everything has shifted for us. We’re getting along way better, and I guess it’s because he’s not having to hide anything from me any longer. No, we can finally be honest with each other, and he’s clearly relieved at being able to let go of all the stress he’s been hanging onto since he tried keeping his daughter’s existence from me.

Eleanor and I get along really well, and she’s just the sweetest little thing. She loves music and insists on talking about my songs every time we’re together—she’s such a fan. It’s been such a long time since I’ve been able to share my passion for music the way I can with her, and she loves playing with my guitar, trying to sing along to my songs. It brings it all back—why I love this art in the first place. I definitely needed that injection of inspiration to get through the next few months.

And Ethan trusts me more now that his daughter seems to like me. She’s the most important thing in his life, but as long as we get along with each other, he seems able to relax around me. He can actually talk to me now without having to hide the most important person in his life, without having to dodge talking about her, even though he loves her so much.

He tells me what’s going on at her school, with her friends, how he gets along with her teachers. He told me about her mother, what happened with her, how he’s avoided being with anyone ever since.

There are still a few things I’ve chosen not to tell him.
