Chapter Ten

When Drew finally exited the freeway, he breathed a sigh of relief. They were almost home. Before heading into Lincoln, he stopped for a red light and took a long look at his car companions. Both of them were fast asleep. His chest constricted, knowing Tori put on an outward bearing of a very independent woman, but she’d let him take care of her and her son today. The moment he’d seen the unmasked fear in Tori’s eyes for her little boy was the moment he knew he would do anything for her.

The light turned green, and he took the familiar streets back to the townhouse. Being at the hospital had brought back a lot of bad memories, but he hadn’t let them take root. He’d practically lived there when Sarah was going through chemo and radiation. She’d died there, and he’d numbly staggered out of those front doors, sure he’d never be the same again. And he hadn’t. But today, walking out holding Cal in his arms and helping Tori to the car, gave him a happier memory for those doors. His heart would never forget Sarah, but he was trying to reassemble a life for himself, just as she’d wanted.

He pulled into his parking spot and looked at Tori. Her hair had come loose from the bun she always wore at school and covered her cheek. She looked vulnerable. His hand reached out to brush her hair back, but she let out a shriek and jumped back so fast she hit her head on the door.

Drew immediately splayed his hand out. “Hey, hey, it’s just me. You’re okay,” he said in his most soothing voice. “We’re home.” The fear in her eyes made his gut clench, knowing her husband had left scars on Tori that might never heal. She was still looking at him, her eyes wide. He slowly picked up her hand and squeezed it. “You’re safe now.”

Tori visibly relaxed, but gingerly touched the back of her head. “I’m sorry. I must seem crazy to you.”

He wanted to reach over and touch the sore spot, assure himself she was okay, but kept his hand in hers, brushing light strokes over her knuckles. “No, not crazy. Just someone who hasn’t been able to let their guard down very often. But you can with me.” He took the keys out of the ignition and nodded toward the back seat. “Let me help you get Cal inside.”

Once he was unbuckled, Cal carefully wrapped his good arm around Drew’s neck as they headed for the townhouse. “You’re really strong,” the little boy said sleepily into his shoulder.

Drew pulled his small body closer to his chest, tenderness welling in him. “And you’re very brave,” he whispered in Cal’s ear.

A figure rose from the darkness of Tori’s porch and she clutched his arm. “Hey, Mick, what are you doing here?” Drew said, feeling Tori’s hand tremble on his bicep. What did Mick think he was doing?

“I heard Tori’s son had been taken to the hospital, so I was coming to check on her.
