“ENTHUSIASM IS COMMON, ENDURANCE IS RARE.”—ANGELA DUCKWORTH
My Marine Corps Marathon experience opened my eyes. I learned a lot that I have applied not only to the realm of athletics but to business and other areas of my life. Many people have the enthusiasm and passion to start something difficult or challenging, but fewer have the endurance to see it through. Anything worthwhile achieving will be difficult, and when things are difficult only those with the endurance to persevere to the end will achieve success. Making a career transition will not be easy. I have found that those who have success in this area focus on three things.
1. Total focus on the goal—for as long as it takes.
2. Taking consistent daily action—no breaks.
3. Listen to your coach—leverage a support group and enlist your network!
All three are necessary for success. One without the other leads to similar results as my Marine Corps Marathon. My “result” in that race was sitting shivering in a dirty ditch, wrapped in a woman’s filthy fleece, while munching on a discarded, half-eaten PowerBar, waiting helplessly for someone to take me back to the medical tent. That is a result, an outcome that I don’t ever want to repeat in any area of my life. It’s humbling and somewhat funny now to talk about, but at the time it was painful and embarrassing, and I lost an opportunity to do something really cool that day. I’ll never get that opportunity again. There is no do-over for that day, that race … it is forever gone. I was, of course, able to learn from that mistake and have other opportunities in the future, but it is important to note that in life we are not guaranteed second chances and we need to make the most of the opportunities we are given. Just like my race, there are no do-overs in life. We need to make it count.
A critical point I learned from that race is that I could not do it on my own. Actually, when I tried, I made a mess of it. It is important to get outside help and enlist the help of your network of friends and contacts when you are in the process of making a career change. This has to be done the right way. If you are unemployed and looking for a job, the entire world needs to know. Everyone! It may sound strange, but many people can be a bit coy with this information. I have worked with countless people who position themselves as “consultants,” offering to help on a project or part-time basis. I am left thinking they left their previous company to start a consulting practice, which many people do and are very successful with it in this new freelance economy. However, if your true aim is to get hired quickly by a company, presenting yourself as a consultant is not the way to do it. Your network will never be able to help you. Many times after sitting
