Chapter Thirteen

Rob

Nervous didn’t begin to cover it.

After ten years of friendship—through acne, first loves, breakups, early adulthood, birthdays, promotions, and so much more—thousands of quiet and not-so-quiet moments, and more ups and downs than a roller coaster, Rob couldn’t deny that he was more nervous than he’d ever been to be leaving the pub with Tony.

Everything was changing between them.

Every look meant something different now.

Even something as simple as a conversation about what kind of dog they should get became a twisted tangle of hidden context and loaded innuendo.

But if sleeping in the same bed as Tony last night and doing absolutely nothing to discourage his sleepy cuddles—actually scooting closer to Tony once he knew he was asleep in hopes they would accidentally bump or Tony would reach for him, ignoring the boner he almost always had when he could smell Tony so close by—Rob knew he was in deep. He might be nervous because this was territory they’d never ventured into before, but he wanted it. He wanted Tony more than anything. And that in itself was terrifying.

There were bigger feelings on the line, bigger emotions than Rob had ever felt before, and he would literally die if things went sideways.

Tony was everything. Tony was the person who’d always been by his side. Tony was the one person he shared everything with.

The temperature was frigid, and little puffs of air left their mouths with every breath, but he was already sweating. Glittering snowflakes fell in the peaceful night.

They headed down a small shoveled path that led to a decorated gazebo on the water’s edge. Away from the courtyard, all was quiet and still. The lake was frozen around the edges but not in the center. Rob spared a moment to wonder if it ever froze over completely.

Tony stepped inside and walked to the back railing, looking out over the still pond as Rob stopped next to him. Despite there being almost no noise this far from the courtyard, Rob would have bet money Tony could hear his heart beating like the wings of a hummingbird.

He’d never been so nervous to be alone with Tony.

“I’m nervous,” Tony murmured, making Rob’s stomach flip-flop.

“Me too.”

“Like the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

“Like if I look at you right now, I might throw up.”

Tony nudged his shoulder. “Pretty much.”

Rob didn’t respond, his throat closing up. He stared out at the silent and still water, black against the white rim of snow. More than anything, he wanted to be close to Tony,
