CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Tyeshia refused to open her eyes at the incessant shaking on her shoulder, instead murmuring death threats to the person that dared bother her. When the death threats did not work and the shaking persisted, however, she cracked open an eyelid and sprung to a sitting position. Her eyes widened further and she slid as far back against the headboard as she could. The distance did not seem nearly great enough.

“What are you doing in here?” She hissed, glancing frantically around to make sure that her outburst had not alerted Mirabel.

“Come with me!” Many Feathers commanded, holding out a hand to her. He did not seem to care who might hear, for he spoke at a normal level, but Tyeshia cared. If he raised the alarm, then soldiers would come, and they would want to know what an Indian was doing in her room and why she, personally, had not screamed bloody murder.

“Keep your voice down! We are inside an armed fortress, you know,” Tyeshia said, her words escaping between clenched teeth. “What do you mean, go with you? Go where?”

“Come with me!” He repeated. His tone was a little more insistent, either not understanding her words enough to turn down the volume on his booming voice, or not caring enough to do so. That made him either very brave or extremely stupid in her book.

“Why in heaven’s name should I do that?” Tyeshia asked. Pro and Con faced off in her brain. Pro started the challenge, listing all the reasons she should crawl off the bed and straight into his arms: handsome, strong, virile, he likes you, he came for you, you’re supposed to stay in his company anyway. Con responded: dangerous, evil, demented—need I go on?

Tyeshia had to admit, both sides had very good points, which did not help make her decision any easier. However, Many Feathers’ response swayed her decision in his favor.

“You will be Many Feathers’ woman. We will start a people of our own, since my people have turned their back on me,” he explained, as if it was already obvious and she should be honored, which in fact she was.

Still, a shiver of apprehension ran up her spine. Why did he have to remind her about why they’d banished him? Of course, everyone could be wrong and his people may have simply banished him for stealing the chief’s favorite horse, or something. She swayed from him again and began to get a little dizzy in the head—go, run, go, run—the internal battle raged on.

“Why would they turn their back on you Many Feathers? Aren’t you a great warrior among your people?” She asked, seeking clarification—anything to help stop the bickering between the Pro and Con inside her head.

“Many Feathers is the best warrior of the Pikuni, but my people have banished me for taking a stand against the white man that would dare to take a Pikuni maiden for his wife.”

“A white man?” Oh crud. Dread suddenly clutched at her heart for she knew which white man, and what had finally driven his brother, Mountain Chief, to send him away.
