Chapter 14

Jack made a point of not going to water polo practice the next day. That morning, she hadn’t accepted a ride from her brother and wore clothes that were easy to walk home in. Thirty minutes after she got home, there was a knock on the front door.

Jack put aside the microwave pizza she was making and went to see what was up. No one else was home and Carson and Tawny probably didn’t even know where she lived.

“Archer?”

He stood on the front porch, bag slung over his shoulder and a smile on his lips. “Coach won't let me swim. Figured you’d be wasting time instead of studying.”

Well, eating wasn’t a waste of time. She hadn’t picked up her backpack since setting it down in her room but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t go back to it.

“I was just making a snack.” Jack stepped back inside and Archer followed. “Want pizza?”

“I don’t think your definition of pizza matches mine.”

Plus his mom would have a fit if Jack fed Archer junk food every time he came over. Returning to the kitchen, she tossed the frozen food in the microwave and turned back to him.

“So you want to get some tutoring in?”

“You have a test on Friday, right? We could do a quick review.”

A pit formed in Jack’s stomach. “Wait, if you’re not at practice then Ace is alone.”

“Again, our definitions don’t align. Ace is not alone in a pool of teammates. And I doubt he’ll get into much trouble on his way back home.”

Right. Letting go of the reins didn’t mean giving them to Archer. She’d just hoped they’d stay glued at the hip until graduation, allowing Archer to naturally watch over her brother.

“You know Ace can find trouble anywhere,” she laughed as the microwave beeped. “And what kind of sidekick are you, leaving your hero alone? What is Batman without Robin?”

Archer rolled his eyes. “Still a superhero. Where’s your backpack?”

“My room. Follow the leader! You can be my sidekick for the day.”

Jack walked her food up the stairs with Archer following close behind.

“I don’t think villains have sidekicks,” Archer observed.

“Good thing Catwoman isn’t a villain.”

“What would you call her?”

“An opportunist! Or at least an antihero.” Jack jumped onto her bed, setting her plate on her lap. “I’d probably call a villain's sidekick a protégé but I’m more of the student in this relationship.”

Archer grabbed her bag from the floor and brought their stuff onto the bed. “Let’s just stick with comrades then. I’m sure there’s a word out there for us, we just have to keep looking.”

“Mmmhmmm.” Jack’s mouth was too stuffed with pizza to speak.

“I’ll do the work, Jack. No need to strain yourself.”

Rolling her eyes, Jack only shoved more pizza in her face. “It’s so good! You can’t blame me for focusing on the food.”

Archer’s lip curled. “If you could even call it food.”

Laughing, Jack took another large bite. “You know you want some,” she said past a mouthful. Archer’s eyes dropped to her mouth.

“You’ve got sauce on your chin.
