MY LESSONS JUST AREN’T WORKING

As you can clearly see from my Limerick Day disaster, when it comes to feeling like your lessons are going nowhere, I have been there. You may hear some teachers say that their lessons aren’t working because of some kind of outside force—the students themselves, their families, the school’s resources. Don’t get me wrong; these things absolutely have an impact on student learning. But at the end of the day, you have to understand that the only thing you DO have control over is you. You can improve your instruction, but only if you’re willing to be vulnerable and accept the idea that you need to improve your instruction.

(FYI: All teachers, not just new teachers, can improve their instruction. If you hear a teacher saying that they don’t need improvement, file that kind of attitude away as an attitude you do not want to emulate.)

Here are some things you may want to consider trying if you find that your lessons keep failing or your students aren’t retaining them.
